Ohio Check-Off / Remittance Program

As an Ohio sheep producer, you are responsible for remitting the Ohio Sheep and Wool Program checkoff assessment. The Ohio sheep checkoff program is a mandatory producer assessment program. You are required to remit one-half of one percent of the sale price of all sheep and/or lambs that you sell. This includes club lambs and breeding sheep sold privately, as well as those sold at public auction. Assessments must be remitted quarterly. If part of an auction sale, please check with your sale manager, as they may deduct the checkoff assessment for you. You are still responsible for lambs sold privately or those not assessed by sale management. This program is independent of the new American Lamb Board checkoff program.

The Ohio Sheep and Wool Program Board of Directors realizes that you are producing a special type of sheep for a specific market. Club lamb and breeding sheep producers currently hold ten of fifteen seats on the Ohio Sheep and Wool Program Board. You are also part of the greater sheep industry. Ohio checkoff funds continue to support 4-H and FFA programs, quality assurance programs and many other marketing related sheep projects. Checkoff funds have enabled Ohio to forge promotional partnerships with many supermarkets, grocery stores, and other allied businesses. These are the folks that support the junior fair auctions and then offer the lamb products to the consumer.

While the program is mandatory, the producer board of directors realizes the program is dependent on the willing and continued support of producers. Therefore, the board is committed to wise use of your dollars. Your input is vital to the Program and will be seriously considered by the Board. Please contact the office or any board member with your suggestions. Your promotion and education ideas will be shared when planning existing and future programming. Your research priorities will be communicated to Ohio researchers and considered by the Board as they allocate funds.
